Love is…
My friend Dean in his latest vox post asks the question, “what is love?” These are the thoughts that have filled my mind so far as I’ve reflected on it.
Love is the essence of life and the fuel for hope. It inspires courage and compels sacrifice. It is the only command that results in freedom; the only substance that too much of doesn’t kill you. Love binds people together and heals wounds that doctors’ scalpels could never touch. Love has no beginning and it has no end. Love is not the property of any religion; it is not a commodity that the rich and powerful can control. Love leads to beauty, to life, to hope, to joy, to freedom, to purpose, to…God. Love is the meaning of life. To love is live and to live is to love. Love is spiritual. Love is physical. Love is emotional. Love is beyond limitation.
Love is a feeling and yet so much more than a feeling. Love is romance and yet so much more than romance. Love is the ultimate choice. Love is beyond language and words. Love is intimate, passionate, deep, and boundless. Love survives, love battles, and love never gives up. Love is not abstract. It’s not a theory or an idea. Love is more than a warm fuzzy feeling. Love gives. Loves puts others first. Love submits. Love is both beyond us and within us. Love beckons us, requires of us, and stretches us. Love makes the impossible possible. Love tears down dividing walls. Love restores, love forgives, loves takes the blame.

What stands out to you the most, Mel? What might you add?

Love is the ultimate choice.
I was talking with co-workers about this - they’re in their early 20’s. I told them, stealing a phrase from an old 80’s song, love is a verb. We decide who we will love. We decide when we will love as Christ did, putting ourselves in last place holding others more important than our own desires.
I think I disappoint the young and in love when I say that.
