An interesting opportunity

Some of you will already be aware of our frustration that, here in Sheffield, Starbucks is never open past 6.30pm on any given evening. And essentially, there are no coffee houses open after this time at all. It seems that if you want to go out in an evening, pubs and bars are the only options. I’ve spoken with so many people though who would love to have the option of a cafe/coffee house in an evening. So about a year ago, I wrote to Starbucks suggesting they extend their opening hours, but other than a “thank you for contacting Starbucks” didn’t get any response or see any changes.

Anyway, I decided last week that I would contact them again, including a few thoughts and ideas for if Starbucks was to open in some evenings. And I got a reply straight back from the District Manager and have a meeting to discuss my ideas with him on Sunday. I have no idea what is going to come of it, but it definitely seems like an interesting opportunity. I’ll keep you posted.

I confess I have an abiding dislike of Starbucks for a number of reasons, but no place is beyond hope. I look forward to hearing stories of what this looks likes in your area.

Thanks for the comments guys. I had the meeting a few hours ago and it went really well. They’re really up for our ideas of having some live music evenings and in particular our idea for having a monthly book club. Obviously we won’t be able to promote this in Starbucks as a Mosaic event, but it just seems like a great opportunity to build relationships with people. We’re going to now put some more specific details to our ideas and then meet again with the District Manager and the store manager for the store we want to use. We’ll see how things unfold!

Good on you man…and if it doesn’t work out, you can start your own cafe and call it “moon-trucks” or something…your slogan could be “truck to us when the other guys close!”

hey did you catch the rugby last night?
    YEEEEW Wallabies!

oh cool. did alex ever tell you about mosaic düsseldorf and starbucks? i’ll be praying for you as you develope these relationships.

I agree. Way cool. I think it is a very excting opportunity. I have to disagree with Russ, though. I think the moon part works, but how about MoonEuros instead of Starbucks. And the slogan could be something like “It’s 10PM and Eur-open? Yes we are.”

I know, I should be fined for that comment.

Russ and AJ - your naming of coffee houses is horrible! Please repent at once. And we’ve stuck with the pound here in the UK so euro just wouldn’t work (not that it did anyway!)

Oh, and Russ, I’m just going to keep my mouth shut about the rugby! We were rubbish!! (Though the score did flatter you!)

Niza - I actually spoke with with Eve some months back about their Starbucks link. Thanks for you prayers!

[…] One other interesting development is that we have had a response from Starbucks regarding our book club proposal and they’re really up for it and looking forward to getting it up and running. I will have a final meeting with the district and store managers in the next week or so to nail down the details, but basically it seems to be a go. I’m excited! […]
