A great Birthday weekend!
Well it’s my 28th birthday tomorrow and this last weekend we decided to use a theatre break we’d been given for my celebration. So after finishing work on Friday, we set off down to London. It was a one night theatre break so for the Friday night we decided we’d stay with Rachel’s aunt who lives in London. A three hour drive down the M1 after a full working week is never nice, but it was great to arrive and have food waiting for us!
Saturday morning we decided to go straight into central London and have a look round some of the shops. We had until 3pm (or so we thought) to get to the theatre where we were seeing The Lion King! We arrived at the theatre at about 2.20pm and were about to go and get a drink, but Rachel decided to just check the tickets. I knew from the look of panic on her face as she did this that something wasn’t right. The start time was 2.00pm! I think we ran inside quicker than either of us have ever moved! Thankfully we hadn’t missed too much, and we loved the show. Rachel had seen it before, but it was a first for me. The costumes, music, and creativity was truly amazing. It was very inspiring.
In the evening we’d arranged to meet up with an old housemate of Rachel’s called Lynda. She works for the BBC and it was great to catch with her and here what she’s up to. She’s doing some great kingdom work inside the BBC too…hopefully there’s going to be an Alpha Course starting soon!
The Saturday night we were staying at a nice 4 star hotel that was included in the theatre break, not far at all from Covent Garden. It was really nice and came with a great breakfast too.
Sunday morning we decided we’d visit Hillsong London at the Dominion Theatre as we were going to be hooking up with some friends of mine who go there in the afternoon. The professionalism and quality of their service totally blew me away. It’s a very different model of church to what we’re looking at, but God is clearly using them and touching loads of people’s lives. It was really good to chat with Matt and Jess who go there to get a bit more of an insider perspective. They have a real heart for people who don’t know Christ and I’m all for any and every expression of church where that is their heart!
After chatting with Matt and Jess in Starbucks, it was back to Rachel’s aunt for tea and then the long drive back to Sheffield. The drive was definitely worth it…it was a great birthday weekend!
