How do you spend time with God?
Rachel and I were talking the other day about the challenge it often is to have meaningful and regular quality time with God through worship, prayer, Bible reading, study, meditation, and the like. Whilst I believe that I can talk with God throughout my day and be aware of His presence all the time, I know too that there is a real need to connect with Him in a more deliberate and intentional way on a regular basis.
I find that for me my time with God seems to go through phases. There can be times when God feels so close, the Bible comes alive every time I open it, and prayer and worship are so real, genuine, and intimate. But then there are definitely times when opening the Bible seems like a chore, prayer seems to be talking to the ceiling, and God in heaven seems to be a million billion miles away. Does anyone else feel like this?
Anyway, I thought it would be great if people could share some of the different ways you connect with God. Often it is the routine of always doing the same thing that can lead to staleness in our relationship with God. So maybe by sharing some of the different ways we enter and enjoy God’s presence, we can encourage one another and perhaps open the door to a renewed freshness and intimacy in our communion with Him.
What are the things that have really helped you draw near to God? What are the barriers and obstacles you have to work through to get quality time with Him? Do you use a journal or find walking in beautiful scenery helpful? Whatever you want to share really…feel free!

Sam, I recently discovered what keeps me spiritually vibrant. What connects me to God. After trying all the suggested methods of “quiet time” and being utterly disappointed with their inability to hold my attention I have realized that I need my books. My commentaries, my “heady” reference books. Study. That is how I best spend time with God. Since this discovery I find that those things I’ve always been told I should be doing come much more naturally. I pray more. I write more. I just break out into conversation with God in the middle of my day. Study is time consuming, but it feeds my soul.
