Inspired by the book of Acts

I’m making my way through the book of Acts at the moment and am again being inspired by what I read. It is such a challenge to catch a glimpse of the energy, passion, purpose, and growth of the early church. Seeing the commitment of those first century Christians to giving their all to the cause of Christ is truly inspirational. It is fascinating to see just how non-static the early church was before the limitations of church buildings, traditions, and structures got in the way. The church was truly a movement. I think it is very easy to lose this sense of the church as a movement and that is when we end up in trouble, no longer impacting the world.

I love seeing the sensitivity to the Spirit throughout the book of Acts too. They don’t just do whatever they feel like; they hear and follow the leading of the Spirit – no matter where He may lead. And clearly the Spirit wasn’t interested in leading them into a life of comfort and safety; more often than not He led them into situations that got them into trouble. I for one am not content with a nice, comfortable Christianity. I have always been a radical at heart and I can sense God stirring me up to rekindle some of that raw, radical nature that has perhaps been tamed down in more recent years. Ordinary people, living nice lives are not going to change the world. It is going to taken single-minded, passionate revolutionaries who lay down their own agendas and take up Christ’s.
