Two ways to get enough

I read a brilliant quote in Philip Yancey’s “Rumours of Another World” this morning. He was quoting G.K. Chesterton whilst talking about greed. Here’s what Chesterton said: “There are two ways to get enough, one is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less”.

How challenging! Have we as Christians got caught up with the worldly mentality of more, more, more. Why do we always need to have more? Do we really need those extra clothes, CD’s, books, DVD’s etc? Sadly, some sections of Christianity have even been taught that having more, more, more is an indication of God’s blessing. I have even heard Christian’s say that they don’t want to drive anything less than a Mercedes because they believe Christian’s should always have the best. But who says Mercedes are best: God or man? Man does, it is a worldy symbol of status; not a godly one. (That is not to say it is wrong for a Christian to have a Mercedes, it is to do with the heart.) Why do so many of us set our hearts on the very same things that the people of the world do though?

Which do we think will have the greater impact: Christians showing off how God has blessed them with more, more, more or Christians desiring less so that they can give, give, give? Surely it is the latter. Let’s not be accumulating Christians; let’s be Christians who give, give, give.
